5 Songs We Bet You Can’t Sit Still For

9 Jan

They’re the songs that make you tap your toes, hum along, and shake your booty. The ones that appear on the playlists we sweat to, mixes we play at parties, and eventually make it to be behind Apple commercials. There’s a set that follows each generation, most of which end up being remixed and rerecorded for the one following it, but we love to call them our own as they come on the speakers and the girls scream “This is my song!” before getting down.

Here we’ve compiled just a few of the songs that have us moving and shaking this week.

1) Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)- Beyonce, I am…Sasha Fierce
-I’m sure this is the song everyone expected, but you know what? There’s a very good reason why it is. From middle aged mothers to Justin Timberlake, everyone is trying to shake it as good as Beyonce because of this song. Singable, moveable, and over all stellar, Beyonce gets a standing ovation for this one. Who else can get that low and still look like a lady?

2) The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song (All Your Power) – The Flaming Lips, At War With The Mystics

-This is a song that you either love or you hate and Telegram Sam is definitely in the former. She challenges you to throw it on a playlist and try not to feel pumped up. And for such a kooky song, this track does make a pretty good point. “It’s a very dangerous thing to do/exactly what you want/because you cannot know yourself/ or what you’d really do.” It’s a good question: What would YOU do with all your power?

3) Shut Up and Let Me Go- The Ting Tings, We Started Nothing
-Bass drum and bouncy electric kick off a song of pure sass, and Jules De Martino has an attitude with that hint of cold English glower that you can’t help but love. It’s a song for strutting that is fully welcomed on our playlists to sweat along to.

4) Don’t Slow Down- Matt & Kim, Grand
-The Brooklyn duo is notorious for fast beats, organ like accompaniment and vocals reminiscent of The Cure and 80’s New Wave. Don’t Slow Down is no exception to their reputation and is a track that’s slightly gritty but definitely catchy. Hollywood should probably pick this one up for chaotic “got to get there in time” scene for a romantic comedy in its near future.

5) Bandages- Hot Hot Heat, Make Up The Breakdown
-
Rolling drums, keys, and tambourine create a spacey beach rock kind of sound that is absolutely infectious. These, teamed with Steve Bays scratchy, flailing vocals make a song thats worthy a shimmy and a shake, if not just a simple, appreciative tap of ones foot. Who would have thought that song about scrapes and a voodoo doll would be so much fun?

Bonus- All 20 tracks of E-603’s, Something for Everyone.
This album is truly one of the ultimate for shaking a tail feather to, and definitely one that all parties should have on rotation. Twenty songs, around 200 samples, and as the title so rightly puts it, Something for everyone. With bits and pieces from people like Mike Jones, Jay Z, 2Pac, to The Killers, Postal Service, Peter Bjorn and John, and over to John Mayer, Britney Spears, and Coldplay- this album has a song that everyone knows and loves in its mix.If you’re not the dancing type, you can at least enjoy trying to pick out what sample comes from where, which might even reap some benefits, due a little contest featured on E-603′s myspace. And because of E-603’s skills, this album blends into itself like one continuous song, so really listing an entire album isn’t actually cheating.

If you dig this album be sure to check out the more recent Torn Up, which is up for a free/”pay what you want” download via tornup.net
