Talking Shop with Soul Singer Jonathan Tolliver

29 Apr

As much as we love it, we have to admit that in Chicago young rock bands are a dime a dozen- as are pop punk, folk, electro, metal and well, just about every style of music imaginable. But here to save us from the monotony of hearing the same genre tackled over and over again are people like Jonathan Tolliver: Soul Singer. Raised by a kickass gospel singer mother, Jonathan didn’t really come into his own as a singer until later in life. Because I thought I sounded like a toad (I still feel this way sometimes). Before then I would play piano in church and sort of mumble along with the choir so that no one could hear me. I did a musical my freshman year called “Once on This Island” that helped get me out of my shell.” (Jonathan Tolliver)
Though the EP featured on his Bandcamp captures his penchant for Soul and R&B, Tolliver is anything but a one-track mind. Keyboardist for fellow Chicago musician Briar Rabbit and dabbler of making electronic music, when it comes down to it Jonathan Tolliver is an ambitious young musician who just loves creating sound, whatever the capacity creativity may strike in.

Jonathan recently charmed us with an email  interview where he told us about his influences, his musical goals and what songs he hates getting stuck in his head.

Free Single The Poison Control Center’s Upcoming Record, “Stranger Ballet”

27 Apr

Official Bio from Afternoon Records:
Proud, loyal Iowans The Poison Control Center released their second full-length Sad Sour Future in May 2010 and spent the next five and a half months solidly touring behind the album.  It was in this, the first leg of what was eventually to become a 200+ date tour  that their third LP Stranger Ballet was born.  The band found the kernels of inspiration in both the near-nightly high of playing shows and the sort of quiet isolation only to be found whilst driving open stretches of highway the next day. Though born on the road, Stranger Ballet is no road record.  It is not mere documentary.  This album is the joyous, fist-pumping camaraderie of four guys against the world.  It is also the realization that, indeed…they are four guys against the world…and the discovery of all that it entails.  It is a commemoration of new friends.  It is a deep longing for long-distance loves.  It is a disdainful lament for a love long-gone.  It is about dreams, sometimes big and sometimes bizarre.  It is about confronting ugly reality with courage, conviction and a passionate, unfailing self-belief. Stranger Ballet is a wide-angle snapshot from a band living each day and playing each note as though life depended upon it.

Stranger Ballet will be released on Afternoon Records on June 7, 2011.  The band has recorded an EP of Covers (Guided By Voices, Thin Lizzy, The Kinks, and more) to be given away for free with any pre-order of the record before June 7th. The band will tour the whole U.S. starting June 3rd.

5 Songs for a Hump Day Slump: The Railroad Revival Tour

27 Apr

You may or may not have heard about the Railroad Revival Tour featuring Mumford and Sons, Old Crow Medicine Show and Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, and for those of you who haven’t here is the gist:  Traveling exclusively in vintage rail cars, the three bands are  journeying across the American Southwest over the course of a week. Starting the tour off on  April 21st in Oakland, California  and finishing it April 27th in New Orleans, the bands have been playing outdoor concerts at each stop, enjoying the 2,000 mile trip across 5 states in vintage train cars pulled by steam powered locomotives. Reviewsic Editor Sam Gordon will be catching the last night of the tour in New Orleans tonight, and in honor of her excitement, we focused week’s Hump Day Slump List around the great bands taking part in the tour. Because we love these three groups so much (and its hard to equally distribute 5 slots among 3 bands…) we’re even giving the Slump list a BONUS song, amping the list up to 6 instead of its usual 5. Oh joy!
