The Weekend in Shows
22 JulDon’t Miss Robert Ellis with The Old 97′s Tonight and Tomorrow at Lincoln Hall
18 Jul
In support of his forthcoming debut LP, Photographs, on New West Records, country wunderkind Robert Ellis will be playing Chicago two nights in a row with the Old 97’s at the revered Lincoln Hall. Music fans 21 and up can catch Ellis tonight and tomorrow at 8pm for $25.
In classic LP fashion, Photographs is split into an A and B-side, with the former playing out folksy, heart-on-his-sleeve bluegrass ballads and the latter showing off his full band country sound.
Ellis answered a few questions for us about Photographs, what inspires him musically and who he’d like to team up with for a duet.
Empire State Express Live at Double Door Tonight
8 Jul
Fresh from the studio, Chicagoans Empire State Express are spending some time in Chicago’s venues before dropping their newest single, “Revolving Doors”.
Forming in 2009, Mat Koehler, Jesse Woelfel and Mike Bruder headed the band’s initial line-up along with Chris Steele, back when their sound was more focused around old school rock n’ roll and rockabilly. A few years later the band still holds onto that sound somewhat, though the line-up has changed to feature Tim O’Donnell on the bass, Derrick Martens on drums, while Chris continues to do his thing with the microphone and guitar.
Since the band is playing Double Door later tonight, we thought we’d share an interview the three did with us this past week. Keep reading to learn more about the music Empire State Express makes, the things that influence them and what they’re plans are for the coming year.

Don’t Miss The Empty Spaces Tonight and On Tour
28 Jun
Kansas City band, The Empty Spaces, are currently touring the Midwest in support of their EP Low Noise. Reviewsic readers may be familiar with The Empty Spaces as the studio band from singer/songwriter Mat Shoare’s similarly named album, which we wrote about back in May. Having been playing together since early 2010, the three piece began collaborating more during the writing process came up with a retro-esque spin on the punk rock style. Low Noise is an upbeat testament to rock n’ roll, chock full of bouncy rockabilly bass lines and yelping vocals with just the right amount of fuzziness to push it into the territory of modern sound. The record is now available on Golden Sound Records and curious fans can learn more about obtaining a copy on the band’s website.
Remaining Midwest Dates:
June 28 - Chicago, IL at The Elbo Room
June 29 - St. Louis, MO at Cicero’s
June 30 - Springfield, MO at Lindberg’s
July 2 - Kansas City, MO at Record Bar
