10 in 2010- Releases We Can’t Wait For

SPOON - TRANSFERENCE
When you’ll hear it: January 26th [Merge]

Spoon’s most recent release, the Got Nuffin’ EP wasn’t just the expected pit stop between great full albums - its title track is also present on the tracklist to Transference, the band’s first full-length since 2007′s Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. In the event you’ve been in a sound proof cave the last 13 years, the band does offer a free MP3 from their past releases Telephono, A Series Of Sneaks, Girls Can Tell, and Kill The Moonlight via spoontheband.com

Vampire Weekend- Contra
When you’ll hear it: January 12th [XL]

Just how does one follow up on one of the most admired debuts of the decade? Obviously, you release a free MP3 about a Mexican rice drink, and then put out a very cool video for a very different kind of song. According to recently divulged information, the Brooklyn and Mexico City-recorded Contra has tracks that are more guitar driven than the self-titled album, and others that feature no guitar at all- as always keeping things varied and interesting.

TED LEO & THE PHARMACISTS - THE BRUTALIST BRICKS
When you’ll hear it: March 9th [Matador]
As frontman Ted Leo mentioned to Stereogum back in September, The Brutalist Bricks is “13 songs, some of which we’ve been playing for a little while, and some of which are completely new. There’s some overflow, too, so I’m sure we’ll try and find something to do with extra tracks.” Look forward to that 13 and hopefully more just in time for curing your Spring Fever.

MGMT - CONGRATULATIONS
When you’ll hear it: Spring (oh how evasive!) [Sony/Columbia]
We’ve been told that Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden recorded their second album with ex-Spacemen 3 member Pete Kember, that it’s being mixed by David Fridmann, and that it features vocals from Royal Trux vocalist Jennifer Herrema. Supposedly the guys working on something with Paul McCartney: We can’t be sure that McCartney will be part of Congratulations, but clearly, congratulations, or at least a sincere pat on the back should go out to MGMT.

MIDLAKE - THE COURAGE OF OTHERS
When you’ll hear it: February 1st [Bella Union]

With their last full release being 2006’s The Trials of VanOccupanther, queries about the forthcoming 3rd LP have been abundant. In explaining the delay, Midlake said “We didn’t know exactly what we wanted, but we know we didn’t want to make the same album as last time. We could have made 10 albums with the amount of time we’ve spent, but that doesn’t mean they’d be saying anything great.” Instead they took this time to move away from the last album’s “Fleetwood Mac-y America” with a shift toward, at least in part, “British folk scene of late ’60s stuff.” We have a pretty good feeling the wait will be worth it, in the end. If not, we’ll just organize a revolt. No big deal.

ARCADE FIRE
When you’ll hear it: March [Merge]
Though they haven’t released a title yet, we do know that Markus Dravs will once again be producing, a tour will take place the Summer of 2010, and a single will be peeking around the corner very soon.

DAVID BYRNE AND FATBOY SLIM - HERE LIES LOVE

When you’ll hear it: February 23rd [Todomundo/Nonesuch]

The two disc album and DVD about the life of Imedla Marcos includes cameos by Santigold, Florence Welch, Tori Amos, Natalie Merchant, Cyndi Lauper, Sharon Jones, St. Vincent, My Brightest Diamond, Steve Earle, and others.

SHE & HIM - VOLUME 2

When you’ll hear it: March 23rd [Merge]
The sequel to Volume 1 will include 13 songs (11 originals, covers of Skeeter Davis and NRBQ, and one Tilly And The Wall guest spot) As well as one very pleased Telegram Sam.

PETER GABRIEL - SCRATCH MY BACK
When you’ll hear it: February 15th [Virgin]

Gabriel’s first album in seven years is a Bob Ezrin-produced orchestral covers collection featuring the music of Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, Elbow, the Kinks, Talking Heads, Lou Reed, David Bowie, and Neil Young. Oh the anticipation!

The Felix Culpa- Sever Your Roots
