5 Songs About Makin’ Whoopee

By reviewsic

In honor of the impending Valentine’s Day holiday Reviewsic has been posting a series of songs inspired by all things lovely for your romantic listening. Today’s list includes a few suggestions for getting “in the mood” to celebrate along with your candles and chocolates. November babies, we know where you came from, and in the name of love, we give you:

5 Songs About Makin’Whoopee

Bang A Gong (Get it On)- T-Rex, Electric Warrior

Either known as ‘Bang A Gong’ or ‘Get it On’ depending on what side of the Atlantic you’re on, this T-Rex track now seems relatively tame when we think about the wonderful songs the newer generation has offered us (‘Lollipop’ anyone?) None the less, we understand why lyrics like “You’re dirty sweet and you’re my girl/Get it on, bang a gong, get it on/Get it on, bang a gong, get it on” had people blushing.

Tequila Moonlight- Self Against City, Telling Secrets to Strangers

This California pop rock five piece re-accounts their evening with a certain lady from dinner plates to pillows, so eloquently stating, “Your speech short of steady/It’s obvious you’re ready” Though we were a little shocked by the near-crassness of this track, it’s all okay because our frontman reassures us: “I don’t have to tell you/It’s not just about that, not just about that”

Lover’s Day- TV on Radio, Dear Science

Complete with lyrics about breaking backs and turning cannibal this song is really more frightening than sexy to us, but we have to acknowledge the sultry sweetness of proclaiming, “Call off work, let’s lay/Call it Lovers Day” However, we don’t think calling in a play date with your mate is a good enough excuse for your boss. Good thing Valentine’s Day is on a Sunday this year, right?

Lay Lady Lay- Bob Dylan, Nashville Skyline

Though not the embodiment of sexy by nature, we think you’d be hard pressed to find a female that can ignore Dylan’s urging to “Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed/Stay, lady, stay, stay while the night is still ahead/I long to see you in the morning light/I long to reach for you in the night”. For this moment we feel like all of womankind could forgive that crazy cowlick and indulge herself enough to listen to good ol’ Bob when he suggests“have your cake and eat it too”

Your Body Is A Wonderland- John Mayer, Room for Squares

Explicit, but hidden beneath a seemingly innocent melody, this is a song that has made many a person a little red in the face once they stopped humming and started to actually sing along to the radio. We give Mayer credit for so tastefully writing a song about spending a little time between the sheets-not only does he let us know what he’s after, but he’s so courteous in the act of doing so. “You tell me where to go and /Though I might leave to find it /I’ll never let your head hit the bed /Without my hand behind it”
